Hanover Water Project

Scatec strives to make a positive impact in the communities near our sites through local value creation and uplifting local communities. In Hanover, a town neighbouring our Linde plant, Scatec is supporting a water security project.

The challenge

In South Africa, around 19% of the population lacks access to reliable water supply. The town of Hanover previously had 3 boreholes in operation serving 850 households and 4700 inhabitants, but the current borehole yield declined over the years. Scatec is supporting an additional 4 boreholes to add approximately 360-500m3 of water.

How we worked together

In partnership with Impact Water Solutions (IWS), Scatec aims to ensure that the community has access to clean water. The project will add to the existing water supply, provide an easy-to-use management system of all the boreholes in Hanover and provide a reservoir-to-reservoir management and monitoring scheme.

Using solar power, the project will provide water security even in periods of power outages. The project aims to create 8 local jobs during installation and operation, increase water supply by 50%, generate additional revenue for the town, and reduce operating costs.

Linde, South Africa, 40 MW

Situated in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape, Linde benefits from extremely high levels of irradiation. Linde was commissioned in July 2014, three months before scheduled deadline. As an early generator, electricity was sold to the utility and provided to households earlier than anticipated. The project holds a 20-year PPA with Eskom, the national utility company. The equity partners are Stanlib, Old Mutual, Simacel and Community Trust. Lenders are Standard Bank + syndicate lenders.
